Wednesday May 25, 2016 marked the date of the 5th Annual Brookfield RPS Property Summit in the Grand Banking Hall at One King West in Toronto. Brookfield RPS hosted a room full senior representatives from Canada's residential real estate and mortgage industries including the major banks, mortgage lenders and insurers as well as other key industry stakeholders. These leaders came together for thought provoking and insightful discussions about the state of the Canadian residential real estate and mortgage market, its future and industry trends. The event agenda included a keynote address by the honourable Frank McKenna, and three panels comprised of distinguished industry leaders A more compressive breakdown of the event follows:

James MacQueen, Executive Vice President of Brookfield RPS and the master of ceremonies of the event, kicked off our 5th Annual Brookfield RPS Property Summit with a warm welcome to the audience. Mr. MacQueen highlighted how important and proud Brookfield RPS is to be able to broker such meaningful industry discussions, by bringing great panel experts together with leaders from a vast representation of organizations in the industry.


The hounourable Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair of TD Bank Group and Chairman of Brookfield Asset Management, delivered the opening remarks. Mr. McKenna spoke about the stability and strength of the Canadian housing and mortgage markets, as well as the current state of the national economy and what we can do to accelerate it to a higher orbit of economic activity.

The Economic Panel was moderated by Dave Lacey, President and CEO of Brookfield RPS and featured three of Canada’s most respected economic minds, Derek Burleton, Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist at TD Bank, Stéfane Marion,  Chief Economist and Strategist at National Bank  and Craig Wright, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at RBC.
The economists presented their outlook on the Canadian housing market, the Canadian and global economies as well as addressed key industry topics such as data, foreign investment, mortgage funding and regulation.


This timely session was moderated by Ernie Johannson, Head, North American Retail Credit and Chief Risk Officer, Canadian Personal & Commercial Banking of BMO Bank of Montreal and featured Andy Charles, President and CEO of Canada Guaranty, Alan Norris, President and CEO of Brookfield Residential and Tara Zecevic, VP, Decision Solutions at Equifax Canada.
The panelists provided valuable insights into consumer lending risk in Alberta, house prices and default rates for all product types, with a specific focus on residential mortgages. This also included in-depth analyses, trends and best practices on these topics, as well as the panelists’ long and short-term expectations for Alberta’s economy and future.


Arguably one of North America’s hottest topics, this session was moderated by Stephanie Price, Equity Research Analyst, Software and Services at CIBC World Markets and featured Ron Stokes, Partner, Financial Services Transaction Leader at EY, Will Cornelissen, Partner at Deloitte Canada, Gabriel Woo, Vice President, Innovation at RBC and Andrew Graham, Co-founder and CEO of Borrowell.
The panelists provided an overview of the Canadian FinTech market, how it compares to the global market generally and more specifically, the US market. The panelists also provided insights into current trends, opportunities and challenges for both FinTechs and traditional financial services companies in Canada, along with insights into innovative trends in the marketplace and the future of FinTech.
